Ryakuga has been involved in video production for the past decade. Using
digital computer-based new technology, we have produced a documentary
viewed on national television. Most of our video work is collaborative
production working with community groups. We also write scripts for
professionals.
In 1993 I worked on a short documentary for the Native Friendship
Centre. The purpose of the video was to change the attitude of
provincial Grade 7 students and to offer a different point of view to
what was being taught about living in Nain.
I am suggesting we utilize the community media group to produce a change
of attitudes video about Burnt Islands. The community still suffers from
a National Film Board film made a decade ago, but which is still shown
on television and at the university.
The content of the video could focus on the innovative media group
itself but also examine the community and the positive statements on
community leadership made by outsiders.
As an aside, I think, in promoting rural communities in this post 9/11
age, we have a lot to offer in examining rural quality of life and
"communities without fear."
I'm proposing the video be made by the facilitators and youth
themselves. Ryakuga will provide ongoing support, especially with
scripting and production advice.
Workshop 1 - Introduction to Collaborative Video.
The first workshop will focus on the components of the video; production
planning/implementation and scripting.
Support will be offered online during the production.
Workshop 2 - Collaborative Editing
The second workshop take place in the middle of the timespan of video
production. All video components should be ready to assemble. The technology
is digital video and editing with a computer.
Support will continue to be offered online.
