PARTICIPATORY COMMUNICATIONS

IN NEWFOUNDLAND AND LABRADOR

In the fall of 2004 The federal Rural
Secretariat and the Canadian Manufacturers
and Exporters Newfoundland and Labrador
Division sponsored an FM radio broadcast/internet
webcast in Stephenville. In 2010
the provincial Rural Secretariat sponsored
another event. It was the first special
event to feature a week of theme days
- each with its own coordinating group.

In 2005 the New Rural Economy Project
sponsored FM Radio 104.7 in Twillingate
for Big Lessons from Small Places: A Forum
on Governance in Rural North America and
the North Atlantic Rim. In 2008 radio
returned for the Fish, Fun and Food Festival.

Ryakuga and the Community - University Research
for Recovery Alliance partnered with the Trails,
Tales and Tunes Festival; the Bonne Bay Cottage
Hospital Heritage Corporation; the Julia Ann Walsh
Heritage Centre, and the Town Council of Norris Point
to initiate the Voice of Bonne Bay (VOBB).
The special event was repeated in 2009,
2010 and 2011. VOBB now has a licence
and is ready to begin regular programming.

Also in 2008 the second Community - University
Research for Recovery Alliance simulcast featured
Theatre NL's Cow Head Theatre Festival.

The Irish Newfoundland Partnership;
the Ireland Business Partnerships;
the St. Patrick's Club, and the Tilting Recreation
and Cultural Society collaborated on the broadcast
of Feile Tilting 2009. The special event
was repeated in 2010.
