Ryakuga Tutorial
These suggestions apply to listening to a live broadcast or an archived file.
1. You need QuickTime 4, 5, 6 or 7 free player to listen to a live broadcast (you can't use Windows Media Player - download a free QuickTime player). The live broadcasting software is - Sorenson Broadcaster and/or QuickTime Broadcaster. You can't use an earlier QuickTime such as version 3. If we are broadcasting MP4 (we'll let you know), you must use QT6/7. Click on the logo below to get a free player.
2. If you already have QuickTime 4, 5, 6 or 7 installed on your computer, you can use the player as a stand-alone to listen in. At the time of the broadcast, proceed with the following steps. In other words, you won't have to use your browser to listen to the broadcast. This method will probably give you the most stable signal.
(a) Connect to the internet.
(b) Open the QuickTime Player.
(c) Click file/open url.
(d) Enter an url which we will provide you at the time of the broadcast at ryakuga.org
(e) Make sure you have set your QuickTime player preferences for the speed of your connection. If you are behind a firewall, go to preferences and try port 80 if port 554 doesn't work. (But not all the servers we use work with port 80. We'll let you know.)
(f) Your player will connect, negotiate and then buffer (store the image for 20 seconds) before going live. We use Sorenson to broadcast radio for 28.8 k modems. However, MP4 requires almost 200 kbps.
3. Check www.ryakuga.org for the time of the next webcast. Click on the link at this time. Please note that the Ryakuga Grassroots Internet Radio server is set up on a high speeed ADSL modem. Think of it as a small club with limited seating capacity :)> The first 60 or so people will listen to the broadcast; after that, you will have to keep trying until somebody signs off. We have also been using a server in British Columbia, courtesy of the Victoria Free-Net Association. It will sustain a lot more connections.
4. Again, make sure you have the QuickTime preferences set correctly for your internet connection speed. Also, if you are behind a firewall, you my not be able to connect through port 554 - try port 80 in your preferences. Or better yet, get your technicans to open up port 554 in the firewall so you can receive the webcasts. Email fred@ryakuga.org if you still have questions.
