8. SUSTAINABILITY

Special event community radio simulcasts, have continued in the fall of 2002. In November, a special event from the offices of the Community Education Network focused on recruiting youth practitioners for the Stephenville community television group initiated during the project.. Sharing Our Future was highlighted during this event. Community media youth also attended from a variety of surrounding communities including L'Anse a Canards; St. Georges and Bay St. George South.

Other community radio events in St. John's with the Conservation Corps of Newfoundland and Labrador and the francophone community were implemented as Sharing Our Future events.

Some of the communities associated with the project, such as Burgeo, La Grande Terre, and Port Saunders have ongoing community media activities, which continue. In Burgeo, the Community Youth Network coordinator works with the program director from the community- owned cable television company. Another community communication director has been chosen in the francophone communities. Roncalli High School is still implementing innovative media programs.

In Lourdes on the Port au Port, the SOF facilitator has moved on to another job but she continues to work with the youth media club. In Ramea, the children's programs on community TV continue as well as the website for the town. The Ramea facilitator is now correspondent for the regional daily newspaper. In Lark Harbour access to the community channel is still available with equipment on loan from Ryakuga.

The Burnt Islands replication site continues with funding separate from the SOF project. Ryakuga provided community media workshops to facilitators and Sharing Our Future Youth. One of the topics discussed included sustaining community media groups with income raising activities.

The Community Education Network, the Long Range Regional Economic Development Board have also submitted a proposal to help three rural community regions develop capacity to implement effective community media public consultation forums to collectively "do strategic planning and implement these plans."

In Bay St. George South, the development association is working on an application for a community radio station.
