Finished the Seniors newsletter for April. Called CBC to track down videos which had been done of this area. Watched the video on the Loch Leven Greenhouses. Took copies of the CAP Center Management manual to Morley and Gertrude and checked with Anita at the Public Library to see if she had a copy. She does not so I will get one for her too. Fred dropped by to deliver videos of the March Forum and other projects he had been involved in.

April 3, 2001

Delivered Seniors newsletters and dropped off materials at E.A.Butler. Met with Laurie and Gertrude on the idea of the Youth Forum. Checked out the discussion board for expatriates and people have begun to use it. Called Port aux Basques about the possibility of having their drama presentation at our Youth Forum and the response was positive and the principal will check with the students and their coach. I will research funding for the transportation and equipment rental.

April 6, 2001

Met with Bev and Tracy about roles of various personnel at the CAP site and where I would eventually fit there. Also shared with Bev the rationale for local readio and how it could impact our community. She will be in contact with Industry Canada. Emailed my weekly message to expatriates. Called Laurie to set up a meeting with her and the Guidance Counselor about an agenda for our forum. Talked with Sharon Piccott about the possibility of going to the Seniors Manor to share the videos from 1984.

April 9, 2001

Went to the Seniors Manor to share the video alluded to in an earlier report. This presentation was very much enjoyed as they reflected on the lives of the people in the video who are no longer with us. Checked on transportation costs of bringing the drama group to this area. Left message. Checked with Kevin Aylwards office on the availability of funding for volunteer recognition event. Will get back to me (same old story).Finished reading through the new CAP binder and highlighted areas of interest. Called 10 people to determine their interest in leadership training. Talked to Jim Marsden about the training and he and I will meet tomorrow.

April 10, 2001

Met with Jim Marsden about the leadership training for the area. Very positive meeting. I will make the initial contacts and Jim¹s office will follow up with further contacts. Returned Fred¹s videos via Jim.

April 11, 2001

Met with Laurie and Nancy at E.A.Butler to set the agenda for our forum and to assign roles for the process. Emailed my list for the leadership program to Jim. Did my weekly email to expatriates. Emailed Wayne Quilty at ACOA to determine funding for our forum. Met with the public librarian about the CAP site.

April 23, 2001

Back from Easter! Updated my email list of expatriates. Made contact with Nancy and Laurie to set up our next meeting. Checked with Gateway Coach lines on transportation costs from Port aux Basques for the drama group. Called John Pumphrey to make copies of the Forum Video for me to donate to the school libraries. Researched volunteer training programs on the Internet. Called Dana Pittman of FINALY who indicated by email an interest in presenting at our youth forum. Did an ad for CFSX to encourage locals to contact me with more email address including their own so that our data base could grow. Did some research for a local business person and showed her how to follow up on the process.

April 24, 2001

Contacted High school in Port aux Basques and talked with the drama coach about attending our forum. There are other issues which may prevent that from happening (one step forward and two back).Had emails come in for a local business and delivered them.

April 26, 2001

Narrowed the forum agenda. Tried to contact the MHA office and the MP office about programs for volunteers , still no response. Began work on a brochure for the CAP site. Sent out videos for dubbing. Typed and faxed a reference for a local resident who is seeking employment.

April 30, 2001

CAP committee meeting tonight. Typed and emailed this report and finished the seniors newsletter with the intent of delivery this afternoon. Emailed resume for a local seeking employment outside the area. Made contact with Parent Find for a local resident. Met with Johnny on the issues of pursuing the position of local recreation director who might cater to the needs of all age groups. I will write up my ideas for him. Faxed a message to the premiers office for the District Liberal Association. I am becoming increasingly discouraged by the struggles I am having in accessing people who consistently do not respond to inquiries or keep putting you off. At the end of the day it is becoming a real downer when you analyze to discover that half of your work does not get done because others choose not to cooperate. What works best for me is personal contact and sharing the workload with others involved in the process ( eg. Forum). The issues for this area have not changed and are unlikely to change without some major economic input from somewhere. I have applied for a student to work with me this summer to initiate the process of digitalizing much of the local history using a digital camera and a scanner. We will acquire the information through visiting local residents and community buildings.

March 1, 2001

Checked email and discussion board , responded to several messages. Did a write up on the Cancer Forum that could be used as a press coverage or for the society records. I then finished my report for February. This being a half day for me I spent the remainder working on visuals for the upcoming forum.

March 5, 2001

This morning I refined the agenda for Saturday¼s forum and met with the host and hostess to give them hard copies of information relevant to the issues which will be discussed at the forum. They need not remember this information but familiarize themselves with it in order to do the introductions. I then wrote a letter to the householder about the upcoming forum and prepared a radio announcement about the same. I then spent some time working on the visuals and organizing photos. I talked to John and Bev about my role with the CAP site and it¼s still not clear what that will be. I prepared a thank you card for SOF projects.

March 6, 2001

Talked with Sandi Barter about the process of making application for a radio station and where they are in the process of upgrading theirs. Checked with Fred on last minute details for the forum and he emailed me information of radio stations. I also entered a contest with Volnet for another year of free internet access ( haven¼t heard if I have won yet ).

March 7, 2001

Met with the students at E.A.Butler about their roles in the forum and to answer any questions they might have. Developed the final schedule for the forum and emailed expatriates on how they could access the forum via internet. Talked with Tom Hutchings about the video on the Zone board and he will ensure that we have it in time for Saturday. Did collages of photos of the area. Made arrangements to set up the studio at E.A.Butler for Friday and Saturday morning. Developed an evaluation format for the forum. Typed the history of St. Columcile Parish for our WEB site. Rhoda Pumphrey dropped by with a donation of a sweat shirt which we could use with the other prizes at the forum.

March 8, 2001

Checked on the entertainment for Saturday and met with the high school students again to clarify their concerns. Talked with Laurie ( CIS ). Finished the visual for watershed management group and organized the video presentations . Talked with Fred to devise a plan for Friday and Saturday.

March 9, 2001

Checked with the high school principal on whether they were going to take advantage of the RED in Schools Program. They still have not committed. Today was the beginning of the panic for the forum is now becoming reality. After a meeting with Fred on issues around the SOF program and radio stations we proceeded to E.A.Butler to begin work with setting up the studio. In the afternoon Fred worked with a group in the school and I took Laurie and two students to the elementary school to do some taping and interviews. Worked out really well and now I am beginning to relax.

March 10, 2001

THE BIG DAY has arrived and all is in order. The forum was attended by about 70 people even though the weather was far from cooperative. The presentations went well and the students performed their roles in a very professional manner. The response from the community is very positive and their reactions are included in the evaluation report. Much worry about nothing

March 13 ,2001

This morning I collated the information contained on the evaluations from Saturday¼s forum and wrote thank you messages to those who participated in the presentation of the forum. I gathered up the displays from the Lions Club. I worked on the information form St. Davids Church which they had given me for the WEB site and got it ready for the students. Being so caught up in the forum this months seniors newsletter is late so I spent some time working on that and later wrote a reference for one of the students who hosted the forum and is seeking scholarships to various universities. She did a wonderful job on Saturday as she has done with all her undertakings and I was glad to support her efforts. I spent some time reading the submission from ARCO re: their radio station application. We hope at some time to be at the application stage as well. Experiencing some difficulty with my email so I had to get that fixed up this morning but no luck.

March 14, 2001

Delivered thank you¼s and WEB info to E.A.Butler and shared with the teaching personnel there my positive experience in working with the students over the weekend. Typed and copied the newsletter ,emailed my group of expats letting them know about the difficulty with my email and things are working again, the lines are once again open. Emailed the evaluation results to Fred and Bev.

March 15, 2001

Sent a new email to expatriates telling them the latest community news and sharing a write up on our forum. Delivered the newsletters and gave videos of past events to John Pumphrey for dubbing on to one tape. The library is growing. Developed and printed an appreciation certificate for presentation at SOF activities.

March 19, 2001

Called Linda Walters at the Canadian Cancer Society about a program she was inquiring about that would see people campaigning to support legislation requiring that a percentage of taxes raised on tobacco products be used to educate young people on the ill effects of the products. Updated my email list and checked with Gertrude on the status of the CAP site. Emailed Hon. Kevin Aylward and Hon. Bill Matthews on the possibility of accessing funding to support a celebration of volunteers in this the International Year of Volunteers.

March 21, 2001

Sent out a call over the radio to determine if there was anyone who would like to donate a TV or VCR to be used to show our videos at the clinic. Called Codroy to determine how they staffed their CAP site. Tried to set up a meeting with Laurie and Nancy MacDonald at E.A.Butler to talk about the possibility of a youth forum. Neither was in today. Met with Tara Lee about the status of the WEB site and things are progressing well.

March 22, 2001

Have received a response to my call for a Tv and a gentleman in Jeffreys is going to donate a black and white but better that than the nothing they currently have there. Emailed Jim Marsden about his proposal for community leadership training and indicated my interest in becoming part of that process. Called Stefan Barnes to inquire about the youth intern program for the CAP site. Emailed the expatriates and gave them an outline of the annual meeting of the Area Development Association. Talked with Janice Young at the outreach office about the possibility of a seniors expo some time in June and we will meet after the looming strike has passed by .

March 26 , 2001

Called Mr. Shears and accepted his offer of the TV and will pick it up later this week. Checked Career information sites for students at the high school. Began work on the newsletter for April , won¼t be late this month. Faxed Lloyd Pretty AGAIN about the hook up for community TV. He returned my call and the costs are just unbelievable. We may not be watching live TV for a while yet.

March 28, 2001

Talked with Gertrude about the sign which has arrived for the CAP site and she must check with the school board to determine where it will be posted. Began compiling weekly report for expatriates. Began writing my monthly report. Checked with Kelly Penney for extra copies of the management manual for the CAP site and she is forwarding 4 copies. Had an email from an expatriate who is getting married this summer and wasn¼t sure of how to spell the church name and wanted me to email her back with it ( interesting how we have become a part of peoples lives).

March 29, 2001

Mailed an appreciation certificate to the Lions Club for their role in the recent forum. Delivered TV to the clinic ( may make time waiting more enjoyable ) Now I need to work on acquiring a VCR. Talked to Laurie about the student SWASP application process and went to E.A.Butler to share how I wrote up a student proposal. Checked the Internet for a student who needed information for an assignment. I sent the week ly news to expatriates and of course finished my March report.

What worked best was the personal contact with people and knowing that the things we are doing are at least being recognized. There is not a lot that I could have done differently with the media limitations that we have. How sustainable this program will be is a million dollar question. I think the interest is there but I don¼t know about if a community group will be able to support the salary without some other support mechanisms. With a declining population and low incomes I don¼t know how much we can expect this community to give. The issues for the communities have not changed but the rumor mill has the out migration increasing steadily. Community schooling and the way education will be delivered in the future is now a discussion topic in the area as people peruse a discussion paper prepared for the school board. There have been several forums held to discuss the issues and now we are at the stage of choosing an acceptable and viable option.

February 5 ,2001

Talked to Laurie ( CIS) about the need for students to perform various tasks for our community forum on March 10. Will meet with her on the roles of each at a time convenient for both of us. Typed and photocopied the seniors newsletter. Confirmed the forum for the Cancer Society and distributed the posters advertising it. Researched and wrote up a report on the sheep dairy farm in its experimental stages. This report will be a page on our local WEB site. Received a call from the guidance counselor asking if I would do a presentation on scholarships and student summer employment at another high school. We will try to accommodate her.

February 7 , 2001

Made a number of calls to set up local entertainment for the community forum on March 10. Have a couple who have committed. Developed a list of issues to be addressed at the forum. E-mailed Fred about his proposal regarding Newfoundland Outports becoming part of the Downhomer and Newfoundland Herald advertising and becoming a partner. Prepared my presentation at the Legion tomorrow night at 7:30. Called CBC re: videos done in this area in 92-93 on the Cormack Trail and Fisheries. Transferred some of my notes from hard copy to hard drive and typed a possible volunteer list. Organized my folder on student presentations.

February 9 ,2001

Made a number of calls reminding people about the need for them to get their WEB page materials to me and called a couple of people about entertainment. Called Don Murphy offering assistance in transferring the video from 84 and he indicated that Fred and he would be doing that on Fredºs next visit. Emailed Cathy Burt re: Fredºs proposal on advertising and becoming a partner with Sharing Our Future. Delivered Februaryºs newsletters to local businesses for distribution. Called to check on the CAP site status. Called CRTC requesting application for license for developmental community radio. Made my presentation to Royal Canadian Legion. They were receptive to the concept and one major concern was what happened once this pilot was completed. My response was that if the program was well received and worked well it is incumbent on us as a community to make it sustainable.

February 13 , 2001

Met John with regard to the issues for the forum. Printed e-mails re: community radio and the application process. Talked to Bev about the CAP site and my role in that process. The expatriate email address book is growing and today I received several responses. Wrote up a list of activities which would comprise the community broadcasting agenda. Read and highlighted the info from CRTC and began collating information for the application. Emailed Fred some questions on the application process.

February 14 ,2001

The telephone chase is still ongoing for entertainment and WEB page materials , getting frustrating. Worked on posters for the March 10 forum and the application for the radio broadcasting. Typed a rationale for a community channel. Had to retype my address book for Bay St. George South and it has now grown to 41.

February 15 , 2001

Worked on visuals for SOF and CAP which can be used at the forum. Met with John re: community forum , and WEB site contents for Local Service District , Area Development Association and CAP. Used some materials already developed and paraphrased it for our needs. Received 6 new emails for expatriates. Compiled outline of CAP mandate and programs from the binder. Will use this outline in any presentations I will do.

February 19 , 2001

Met with Laurie at E.A.Butler to discuss the forum and my requirements in terms of personnel . She will now meet with groups to determine interest and get back to me. Called the radio station to advertise the Cancer Forum and to give the absolute deadline for info for the WEB page. Met with John to determine who the presenters would be for the forum. Contacted Fred for a copy of the Sharing Our Future Logo. Set up a meeting between Kelly Penney and the steering committee of CAP. Printed the posters for the Community Forum. Read through CNL - CAP work plan.

February 21 , 2001

Met with Kelly Penney and the CAP steering committee on roles and procedures now that the site has been approved. Very informative meeting. Worked on write up about the eel farm. Photocopied materials on the histories of local churches. Emailed Heather Elliott again about the CBC tapes of the area. Called Cyril Organ on funding for local training options and will set up a meeting between he John , Eric and I.

February 23 , 2001

Met with Laurie , she has a list of workers for the forum but they have to be approved by the principal. Met with John to talk about the schedule for the forum and CAP site information. Will set up a meeting with Cyril Organ when John gets back from his St. Johns meeting. Went to E.A.Butler to talk to Gertrude about setup of the Cancer forum and to provide her with a copy of the VOLNet Internet guide for her school. Downloaded the logo and saved for use on stationary and other print materials.

February 26 , 2001

Wrote press release for the March 10 forum and invited government officials to the same. Emailed a news report concerning a community ride for sight , with pictures, to expatriates. Met with the teacher who is doing the WEB page and gave her some more materials. Confirmed the Cancer forum for tomorrow night and made arrangements with the High School for coffee and tea. Researched radio broadcasting and began a telephone chase to contact the guy who made application for Lewisporte. Distributed posters for the forum.

February 27 , 2001

Sent press releases to the Western Star and Georgian on the March 10 forum. Still trying to contact Todd Foss in Lewsiporte on community radio application. Checked to make sure that all was in place for the forum tonight. Wrote a job description , with a university student , for a summer SWASP program and filed application. This student program will be a great asset in researching and organizing community forums and history. The Cancer Forum went really well , with 4 presenters , each with a different focus. Considering the weather and the many other community events around Shrove Tuesday the 20 people who turned out was a good crowd. The presenters were really pleased.

1. What I would do differently. For the most part there was little I could have done differently considering the restrictions placed on a community and workers who do not have access to broadcasting technology.

2. What worked well . The email process is connecting me with a lot of people who will eventually be able to contribute to any community documentation of its history. It will also allow people to be in touch with each other. While working with others is a good concept and one I support , I find that in this process I spend so much of my time on the phone chase and reworking things which I would have thought were done.

3. Current Community Issues.

outmigration

medical services

employment issues

January 2, 2001

Happy New Year !!!! This morning I made a number of calls about the Christmas video but was unable to contact anyone. I checked the email and WEB board before proceeding to work on the seniors newsletter for January. Developed the overheads for presentations on SOF. I then wrote a letter to various groups in the area requesting a time to meet with them to outline the role of SOF in this area and how we could work together to fulfill that role. The Tender Loving Care office had promised some written materials which I could use in my newsletters so I picked that up. I tried to reach Carol Ann Carter about her promise to forward an application for funding under their REACH program , it had not been sent so the receptionist will ensure it is sent out. I made another effort to contact breakfast television to get information for a local business.

January 3, 2001

Began delivery of letters on the role of SOF in this area. There were some good messages on the board from Fred and Tom Hutchings re: community forums. Began typing of my seniors newsletter before copying the survey to be forwarded to businesses in the area. Made several calls re: Christmas programs. I checked with the university student on the digital photos and the weather has prevented her from doing them. If she doesn†t get them done there is a digital camera at the high school that students can use to get the same photo list complete. E-mailed Cathy Burt to request her assistance in acquiring email addresses of expatriates.

January 4, 2001

Worked on a list of issues for community forums and copied the seniors newsletter. I then developed a list of items to discuss with Eric and John to improve community networking. Checked the mail and message boards and made several calls pertaining to WEB page and business surveys.

January 8, 2001

The computer for my office arrived today so I spent some time setting it up and experimenting. Part of that process was to contact VOL Net to determine when I could expect Internet hookup. I met with John to inform him of some items I had been working on while he was on holidays with emphasis on types of forums we could anticipate running here in the new year. He has several that need to be run , with focus on agricultural issues and fishery issues. The seniors newsletters were delivered to business outlets for distribution. The surveys for business issues were mailed out via Canada Post. I received my first call today pertaining to the history of the area and this lady gave me her son†s email address so that I might contact him on some of the history he has accumulated. In the afternoon I also met with Laurie , our CIS worker, to discuss a schedule for us to meet next week to look at student employment and scholarship issues.

January 9 ,2001

Called Lloyd Pretty on cost factor for cable hookups. The technicians are in the area doing the mapping and will give us the estimate when that process is completed. It will be in the tens of thousands of dollars. I copied a list of job site which I had downloaded from the Internet for a student intern who is working at the office. Response are coming in from the business survey and from the WEB page project ( slowly but surely ). I prepared my presentation which I will do for the Lions Club tomorrow night and tracked down the Christmas video , finally. Met with the president of the ADA to look at the possibility of getting a printer for my office. He asked me to develop a small budget and he would take it to their next meeting. Met with a local businessman to discuss his response to the survey.

January 10 , 2001

Developed an operational budget for tapes , printer , postage etc. and forward to the president of the association. Met with John this morning to discuss community forums. There are several issues which are at the forefront and could be addressed in public forum , including watershed management and sheep dairy products. Read the tutorial on Ryakuga†s library. Met with a local business person who is interested in what we can do to promote tourism in the area. Ironically shortly after he left the office another gentleman arrived and left materials on Receiving the World program to celebrate Marconi and his efforts. He will return later to discuss the program. This afternoon I spent some time perusing the document The Green Source which describes funding sources for community projects ( interesting). Presented to the Lions Club on my role in the community. It proved to be worthwhile and there was some interest shown in what I was doing. As a matter of fact I picked up an item for my next senior†s newsletter.

January 15 , 2001

Shelley Turner was in today to set up my Internet account and did some training for myself and the girls in the ADA office. Met with the principal at E.A.Butler to talk about the project with the CIS worker and researching scholarships and student summer employment opportunities. She is quite supportive , I will met with Laurie next week to set up a schedule for students. While there the guidance counselor loaned me a book on scholarships. The sign for the CAP site has arrived , now for the next big announcement - when will we get the sight?

January 17 , 2001

Contacted the Canadian Cancer Society to determine whether their educational program included public forums and it does. We are scheduled for a forum on breast and prostrate cancer for February 27. Regional cable finally forwarded me the application for the REACH program which was completed and faxed back to them immediately, hopefully I†ll get some money from them for equipment. I talked to Tom Hutchings about training programs which might be available to business people in the area , we will discuss this when he comes to the area later this week. I developed another public notice addressing projects which I want to do and forwarded it to the Western Star correspondent and made copies for the Area Development Members. Tonight I met with the ADA and presented on my role . It helped clarify many of the questions about my role and responsibilities. It also stirred some interest in connecting with expatriates. Two members will attend the meeting on Friday with Bev, Fred , Tom and I.

January 19 , 2001

Today I wrote up a proposal to acquire some technological equipment for my office, including a scanner, digital camera and camcorder. The proposal has been faxed and now the waiting begins. Having access to it will allow me to more easily get other people involved in the process. Called several computer suppliers to get prices on printers since the development association had approved my budget allowing me to purchase some supplies. Met with Bev , Fred , John and Tom Hutchings to discuss possible forums which could evolve out of local issues. At this meeting it was decided to pursue radio as a broadcasting option as opposed to or supportive of the efforts we are making in acquiring TV. Tom will check the requirements of CRTC. Our group will meet on Friday January 23 to iron out the forum for March 10. Today I received contact from 5 expatriates. The videotaped evaluation was a different experience, I†m sure we†ll get used to it. Things are progressing.

January 22 , 2001

This morning I wrote a letter to the Lions Club requesting their building for a planning meeting and for the forum which will be held on March 10.Checked with the CIS worker about scheduling a meeting to schedule a time to meet with the high school students on summer employment and scholarship research. Talked to John Pumphrey about his collection of video which we could access for our forum. The new printer has been installed in my office and on of my first experiments was to develop a poster for the Harbor Authority for their annual meeting. Had a discussion with Shelly Turner about some complications with our Internet hookup, the problem is with the phone lines.

January 23 , 2001

I have begun to collect email addresses from expatriates and develop an address book. Did a poster board for any email messages I will receive from Bay St. Georgians. This will be on display in the entrance to the building. Copied some of my paper materials for Jesse Fudge. This afternoon I met with Laurie (CIS) and developed a plan for the presentation to students.

January 26 , 2001

This morning was consumed with the meeting to develop a plan for our community forum to be held on March 10. The plan seems to be doable. Copied and faxed the letter from Penelope Rowe about the International youth Volunteer forum to the high school. More messages have arrived via email .

January 29 , 2001

Today I met with the principal of the high school about the RED in schools guide and to confirm February 27 as a good time for the Cancer forum. She will address the RED guide with the staff. The session with Level 1 students went really well as we discussed the items on the agenda and then they led me to a discussion on student loans. They now have some god sites to check out and an offer from me to assist in any way I can. I had to organize my notes from Friday†s meeting in order to have a working document , which I copied and gave to John so we could check off items as they are completed. I reviewed the material in the SOF binder, not much new but it is good to reflect every once in a while. Sent another email to my Bay St. George group. I also made contact with the Coast Guard about a recreational boating program which they are promoting. This program , centered around their policy is provided through private enterprise.

January 30 , 2001

Today I made more contacts reminding people of deadlines for material for the community WEB page ( like pulling teeth to get the info even though everyone wants the project done ). I began the collation of material for the February newsletter and wrote up a promotional poster for a local business , material which they could use on their section of the WEB page. Today I have received 2 videos of local events which have happened in the past . These will become part of the collection leading to the development of the local history and be used in our community forum. Talked to Angela Gill about her copy of the video from the 1984 forum and she is still looking for it. Talked to Angela Dawe about the materials Jesse had forwarded to me and she wanted a copy so I faxed it to her and included a copy of the presentation I do with community groups. Downloaded the community mapping and assessments emailed by Fred.

January 31 , 2001

This being the end of the month its report time and this morning I have spent time completing that process , including the community assessment. I completed an historical item for the Three Rivers Lions Club and began developing a list of community entertainers who might perform for the community forum. Began typing my senior†s newsletter. February promises to be a busy month.

1. What I would do differently would be to have set deadlines for information to be included in the WEB page. Not having done so has meant that I have had to do the same work over and over. To distribute my newsletters I should have had a container at each outlet in order to give them more exposure.

2. I have had many positive experiences during the past few months but when I receive emails from the expatriates supporting our efforts. Getting phone calls from community members about any of the things I am doing are also positive. The public presentations have also given me feedback and realization of how important community connections are.

December 1 :

Attended the Youth Environment and Economy conference at Stephenville. Took part in the general session by Bruce Gilbert and a meeting of all CAP site workers in which Mary Barter shared the Gander experience for Regional CAP facilitators.

December 4:

Today I typed and copied Volume 1 Number 1 of the seniors newsletter which I am going to have done monthly. I contacted E.A.Butler to have them video tape their concert and the Lioness club to have them tape the Santa Claus parade and the community tree lighting. A sort time was spent viewing the video It's Your Business. This will be a good resource to use in a preliminary meeting with the business community after the Christmas break. In order to get students moving I typed and copied a list of Government Sites for Youth to have posted at the high school.

December 5:

At Maxine's request I faxed a copy of my November report to her so she could have some idea about what I was doing ( isn't that what we're all about , sharing?). This morning I distributed the seniors newsletter to local business for distribution and met with 10 business owners to discuss our proposed WEB site and to determine their interest. The interest is definitely there, now I have to get the materials from them. Met with the CIS worker and gave her a copy of the youth WEB sites. As usual I checked the WEB board for SOF and checked my e-mail. Also today I tried to make contact with Lloyd Pretty to determine the possibility of getting a cable hookup at minimal or no cost ( difficult man to reach).

December 7:

Contact was made today with the United Church group to get them involved with our WEB site. Today I received my first package from a local group who want the material on our page. I spent some time today researching sites for student programs such as exchange programs. I tried again this morning to contact Lloyd Pretty but to no avail so I moved further up the ladder and spoke with the marketing manager Carol Ann Carter and discussed our interest in local programming and the possibility of their helping to or totally financing the project. She was non-committal but will forward us an application for REACH rant funding. I have now begun to develop a volunteer list in anticipation of the CAP site. By the time the site is approved I will have all my work done.

December 11: I met with John to discuss the Area Developments contribution to the WEB page and my schedule for the Holidays. The fax seemed the only solution to contacting Lloyd Pretty and by George it worked, I had a response in the matter of minutes requesting some additional information. The Area Development reps decided that this building could become the communication site and I faxed that response back to Mr. Pretty. While on the track of acquiring technology for the area I was in contact with the College of the North Atlantic for recording equipment ( none available currently) and with Jodi Mahon at VOL Net to check on my computer application (still pending)

December 13:

Responded to Maxine's WEB board message (good stuff) and to Fred's e-mail re:community promotion of our sites. Met with John to touch base. I went to E.A.Butler and met with Laurie about the Christmas video. It is complete but not yet dubbed. Laurie and I also discussed the possibility of pooling our efforts after the holidays to work with the students on the issues of summer employment and scholarships. We will use the internet as much as possible. In an effort to determine community business needs and to possibly ste up some forums after the holidays I constructed a survey which I will run by John when he returns from vacation in January. Reed Weir , a local potter dropped by and I alerted her to the need of getting materials in to me ASAP. Fred dropped by the office and gave me instruction in attaching files to e-mail.I did learn something because I have done it several time now and it has worked. Thanks Fred.

December 15:

After Wednesday's instruction on "how it's done" I typed , saved and e-mailed my November report to Fred ( not late , I already had faxed it earlier ). Contacts have been made today with some people about our WEB page and reminded them of deadlines. I made a great contact today with Cathy Burt who has developed a WEB site called Newfoundland Outports. She has offered, even though living in Ontario , to assist in any project we take on over the Net.

December 18:

Met with John to share with him that my application with VOL Net had been approved and he cleared the money for my computer. The second part of the application and the cheque very quickly made their way to the mail. I made my first contact through the Newfoundland Outport message board and left a message about who we are and what we are about. Hopefully I will get some contacts through it. E-mail messages were directed to Fred containing the list of youth sites and a request for the video of the panel discussion which took place at the RED board AGM.

December 19:

After my regular morning check of e-mail and WEB board I developed a presentation which I will use when I begin a series of meetings with community groups in the new year. It is really a condensation of the materials we received from SOF. Talked to Bev today and shared with her the good news about my computer , thanks to her putting me on to the deal. I have begun to use what I have learned and showed a business owner how to cut and paste files to e-mail. I have engaged a university student to use her digital camera over the holidays to do a list of pictures for me. Internet research of sites about seniors housing issues and scholarships for young people took up some of the afternoon while I later worked with the secretary here at the office to edit a newsletter she was doing for the association.

December 22:

The morning routine was followed but not a lot of info coming down through the wires these days , must be the season.I did post a Christmas greeting on the board.I made contact with the people who are doing video work on the Christmas programs, it will be the new year before that is completed. It will still be enjoyable during the cold days and evenings. Met with the lady who is doing the WEB page , she is still enthusiastic. Today I made contact with ASN to check on their e-mail address and to get marketing material for a local potter. And Of course as my last duty of the day and week I am sitting here at the keyboard finishing off the "week in review".
